Principles and Practice

The principles of chiropractic are based on two major premises.  The first premise is that the body is a self-healing and self-regulating organism.  There is an innate intelligence within each individual which is responsible for all healing, growth, and development. When you cut your finger you do not have to think about healing the cut. Your body knows exactly what needs to be done to stop the bleeding and heal the wound.

The second premise of chiropractic is that the nerve system, brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves, is the master coordinator of our innate intelligence. It is the nervous system that is responsible for monitoring ALL functions in the body and initiating all actions that need to take place.  When you run it is your nerve system that instructs the you muscles to contract. The nerve system then detects a greater need for oxygen and thus tells your heart to beat faster and your lungs to breath faster. And then when you stop it is your nerve system that slows everything down again. Other functions like digestion, sleeping, and healing are coordinated by the nerve system in the same manner.

From these two premises it can be concluded that if there is a disturbance in the nervous system, then our ability to heal will also be impaired. This is what was discovered by D.D. Palmer in 1895 when he created the healing discipline of chiropractic.

Today these same principles still hold true. A disturbance to the normal function of the nerve system is called a subluxation.  When a subluxation is present the flow of mental impulses to the body and the gathering of information from the body will be impaired.  This impairment can manifest in a variety of conditions: colic in infants, ear infections in toddlers, learning disabilities in children, or chronic fatigue in adults.

The nerve system is susceptible to developing disturbances and these disturbances are called subluxations. Since all systems in the body require a nerve system free of subluxations to function properly, any body system is susceptible to malfunction due to subluxations.

The role of the chiropractor is to detect and correct subluxations.  Often subluxations are present in the absence of symptoms but that does not mean they are not causing harm. A wellness approach to chiropractic is to be checked for subluxations regularly throughout your life and clear them whenever found. This will help to achieve the highest level of function possible in your nerve system. You can think of it as making your nerve system stronger.  This will give you the greatest potential at achieving the highest level of health possible.

There are many different approaches to chiropractic. Some chiropractors focus on helping children achieve ideal health, while others prefer to work with the elderly suffering with chronic illness. Many chiropractors work with everyone in the family and some even work with pets.

The techniques used by chiropractors also vary.  Some use their hands to deliver a chiropractic adjustment by moving the individual bones in the spine (vertebrae), while others prefer to use hand held instruments. The force applied to the body also varies considerably ranging from a very gentle contact to a high velocity thrust with precise control.

Regardless of the focus of a particular practitioner or the particular technique that is used, the purpose of the chiropractor is to reduce or eliminate the subluxation to allow the body to express its innate intelligence to its fullest.

The variety within the profession of chiropractic is a great advantage. Every person is an unique individual and there is no single approach that would work everyone.  It helps to investigate the style used by a particular chiropractor and see if it fits with the type of care you are looking for.

Benefits

The benefits of chiropractic will impact all aspects of your life. Many people have had severely debilitating physical ailments heal after their subluxations have been corrected.  Others notice a greater capacity in their mental and emotional functions.  People have also noticed that their relationships in life become richer because they are able to connect with people at a deeper level.

The experience of each person is unique. Where you are in life today is the sum total of all of your life experience up to now. Clearing out the subluxations that have accumulated over the years will have a tremendous improvement on your health. This improvement won't just deal with past problems.  It will also allow you to avoid future problems and improve your overall quality of life.

The best way to benefit from chiropractic is to get your children under care from the moment they are born.  Allowing your children to grow up with a nerve system clear of subluxation will give them the best chance at achieving their highest expression of life.
