Principles and Practice
Bowen therapy is a dynamic and powerful therapy that quickly resets the body's structure and addresses pain using a specific sequence of gentle muscle rolls. It is a
unique therapy that employs the Bowen technique to work on muscle and connective tissue to stimulate physiological changes and energy flow. By doing this the body's own resources are empowered to
heal. It was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Australia more than 40 years ago and is now being used in several different countries to treat thousands of people suffering from a variety of illnesses.
The technique itself consists of a series of precise moves over specific structures (muscle, tendon, or nerve sheath) in the body. The moves are no deeper than the fascia of superficially accessible
muscles and only gentle pressure is needed. There are frequent and important pauses between each series of moves, giving the body time to benefit from each.
The strength of Bowen therapy is that it acts as a catalyst for the body to heal itself with minimal intervention, in contrast to other hands-on disciplines where the therapist can impose the healing
mechanism on the patient through the technique performed.
Bowen is NOT massage - rubbing or even prolonged touching after a recent treatment could interfere with its effectiveness
Bowen is NOT acupressure - some of the areas of focus can coincide with acupuncture points
Bowen is NOT chiropractic - there is no adjustment of bony structure although vertebral movement does occur as evidence of the body re-aligning itself
Bowen is NOT directional energy work - energy work may be intrusive and may focus excessively on accomplishing the desired result, which may or may not coincide with the patient's needs
Bowen is NOT physiotherapy or neuromuscular re-education
Bowen is NOT trigger-point therapy - some trigger points overlap but most trigger points are found in the centre of the muscle unlike Bowen moves that are mainly where muscle groups overlap
Bowen is NOT fascia release - the fascia is minutely disturbed but not forcefully separated
Bowen is NOT lymphatic massage - it can however stimulate lymphatic releases
Other forms of manipulative or energetic therapy performed 4 days before and up to 5 days after a Bowen treatment may interfere with its effectiveness.
