The style of karate taught at our club is specifically called Matsubayashi-Ryu and was developed in the
country of Okinawa, by Osensei Shoshin Nagamine. This style is also considered a Shorin-Ryu style and the two names are used interchangeably.
In Okinawa the development of martial arts has a long history, much of which is not known in great detail because it was passed on by oral tradition for many
centuries. Over time, two different school of karate emerged; one called Shuri-te and the other called Naha-te.
The Naha-te school is divided into two styles; Goju-Ryu and Uechi-Ryu. The Shuri-te school is divided into three schools; two are called Shorin-Ryu and the third is
our style called Matsubayashi-Ryu.
"Martial arts and virtue must be unified as one. Martial arts without virtue is simply violence. Martial arts with virtue will purify society and
culture shall flourish."
- O'Sensei Shosin Nagamine -
Joyfulness
Joyfulness is being filled with happiness, peace, love and a sense of well-being. Joy is inside us all. It comes from a sense of being loved. It comes from an appreciation for the gift of life. Joy comes when we are doing what we know is right. Joy is the inner sense that can carry us through the hard times, even when we are feeling very sad.
